The story behind the image

The Good Samaritan’s care continues beyond the roadside. In Luke 10, a traveler has been robbed and injured; a priest and a Levite pass by, but a Samaritan stops to help. He treats the wounds, places the man on his own animal and brings him to an inn. The next day he pays the innkeeper and promises to cover further expense. This illustration catches the arrival: the injured traveler must still be supported as others receive him. Its theme is practical compassion, carried through into shelter, care and responsibility for another person.

Two details to notice

  • The injured traveler rests across the animal while another figure supports him.
  • A bearded figure gestures from the steps, with a woman looking down from the doorway.
